Tumwater finds its offense in 2nd half

The Olympian | • Published September 12, 2009 A second-half burst of offense is what the Tumwater Thunderbirds needed in their non-league game against Clover Park on Friday night. 
With a slim 9-6 lead at halftime, the T-Birds put up 27 points in the second half on their way to a 36-19 win over the Class 3A Warriors at Tumwater District Stadium.
Tumwater coach Sid Otton said he was pleased with the win, but he realized what his team needs to work on before starting Class 2A Evergreen Conference play against River Ridge next week.
“We settled down in the second half,” Otton said. “We were forced in the first half, especially on offense. We definitely gave up a lot of opportunities early.”
The T-Birds, coming off a 38-21 loss to Class 3A Timberline last week, got things going early on Josh Yandle’s 8-yard touchdown run for the game’s first score.
The Tumwater offense had its share of different players scoring. Jake Dowers caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Kyle Warner to start the third quarter. Ronnie Hastie (5-yard touchdown run) and Payton Olson (2-yard touchdown run) also found the end zone.
Clover Park quarterback Ionatama Pritchard, the brother of former Clover Park and Stanford University quarterback Tavita Pritchard, showed his versatility. He had all three of the Warriors’ touchdowns on the ground – going 73, 30 and 12 yards. Clover Park was shut out last week against Auburn Mountainview, 23-0.
“We have things to work on,” Otton said.
